BUSINESSWEEK Writes-Up the Social Media Press Release

The July 3 issue of BUSINESSWEEK (on news-stands now) contains an article on the Social Media Press Release template!

If you're visiting this blog for the first time, thanks to the BW article - Welcome! Please subscribe to our RSS feed if you're interested in an ongoing dialogue and ideas about "next generation" PR strategies. (And if you're feeling benevolent, please feel free to also add this blog to your Technorati favorites.)

  • If you are interested in downloading the Social Media Press Release template, please visit our Agency's website.
  • If you are interested in reading about the blogosphere's reactions to-date, visit our purpose-built del.icio.us page. This page will also give you a sense of where we see the "PR 2.0" trend headed: although it may look pretty straightforward now, in the future, social bookmarking sites like del.icio.us will allow PR pros to become ongoing "stewards of the storyline."
  • If you'd like to see how our Social Media Press Release template looks "in real life," you can see the first-ever version, released by SHIFT Communications, here.
  • If you'd like to see the first Social Media Press Release to be put out by a corporation, you can view Cymfony's release (as discussed in the BW article) here.

I am afraid I must also use this unique opportunity to remind folks that SHIFT Communications is a kick-ass, for-profit PR agency. (Pure-bred bloggers, shield your eyes!)

Welcome to PR Squared. Welcome to "PR 2.0". Most of all, welcome.

Todd - very cool. Congrats on great press for press. One thought that has been bugging me: most corporations (even tech companies) do not even know what a del.icio.us page is; what a tag is; or (gasp) how they can even use RSS. You're on the forefront of the new discussion but companies (even mine) need help to catch up.

May I suggest - or has this been done - a defrenpedia for "new media" (I hate the term PR 2.0) approaches to getting into the discussion?

Hi Gillian -
Yup, I admit, this is probably leading-edge stuff (maybe even bleeding edge) for most corporations... that doesn't mean that it is *not* the future, though.

As for a glossary of some sort: watch this space. ;)

Todd:

Congrats on the coverage. Did your team pitch them or did they just find out about via their bloggers??

Thanks, John!
And to answer your question - nope, we did not pitch them (or anyone else for that matter).
"Not that there's anything wrong with that!"

Todd: GREAT to see such coverage in BusinessWeek. True enough that so many companies are in the dark -- not just about RSS, and tagging, and whatever else -- but also about, well, BLOGGING. No place better to start than here. Congrats!

Congrats!

Hey Todd, Crow away. And every pure-bred blogger will cheer you on. The social media release template was something that we all benefitted from. But you did it first buddy. So, enjoy the warm glow of the sun. You've earned it.

Hi Todd,
Big thumbs up for the coverage and the overall positive reception of the social media press release. From my point of view (being from CEE region and all that) I think that we won’t see it in real use anytime soon, but i like the thinking behind it. Maybe it’s different in the US but here the journalists are lazy (well, most of them as the best ones found their place in business and... public relations :) and bloggers do not have all that influence around here.

Anyway, few things from the SMPR are cool and I like them which mean I am pitching them to my colleagues and to their clients. So thank you for the ideas and keep it coming ;-)

PS: better do not check our website, its awful as we work more for the clients than on our own marketing. shame on us.

Congratulations Todd. You've always been at the head of the class and steadfast in your beliefs even when some around you considered your beliefs to be passing fads. You have proven again that you are the best at what you do!
