E-Book on Social Media Marketing
Big news! I wrote an e-book comprised of my “best thinking” of the past 5 years.
If you want to skip right to the good stuff, click here for the e-book.
If you’ve been reading this blog since its launch in June 2004, there won’t be a whole lot of surprises … but the tale of the blog stats suggests that most PR-Squared readers did not discover this blog until fairly recently.
The e-book packages up all the “best stuff” nicely, and more importantly it’s in a user-friendly PDF format that allows you to FORWARD TO A FRIEND.
Let’s face it: most of this blog’s readers already “get it.” You understand that we are poised on the “brink” of amazing change. You can already see how Social Media is irresistably changing the face of Marketing.
But, I’ll bet you have a ton of friends who either “don’t get it” or only kinda-sorta do.
Download the e-book. Send it to your friends, with my compliments. Because the e-book starts off slow with some basic principles, and then advances to some fairly sophisticated techniques, almost anyone intrigued by Social Media Marketing will get something out of it. At least, that’s my hope!
I am fortunate to have some amazing friends. David Meerman Scott was happy to gimme a thumb’s-up even before he read the e-book:
Brink – Views on Todd Defren’s New e-Book
And the peerless Ann Handley of MarketingProfs (who actually did read it, bless her!) didn’t hesitate to excerpt it and offer the e-book as a download at her incredible and influential site. Thank you, Ann!
Now I need your help. Will you help me spread the word?
I’ve got a lot invested in this baby. We’re talking about FIVE YEARS’ worth of ideas, crammed into a 40–page e-book.
Will you tweet the link? Will you email it to a colleague? Will you read it, and give me some feedback? — Did it help you?
Thanks!!

Hi Todd – I want to help you spread the word because I honestly believe works like yours will be extremely important to millions of people in the near future. I know my next statement may not be original but I believe that SM will have a bigger impact on society than Gutenberg’s printing press did.
Here is where you can help me. I am not on Twitter and do not really know how to go about it. Being a Boomer I sometimes struggle with technology, but my determination always carries me through.
I belong to a very large group (In the hundreds of thousands) of professionals who are in dire needs of embracing SM, and I want to see a lot of them succeed.
Are you able to help me so I can help you spread the word about your book?
Sincerely,
John Carr
Toronto, Canada.
It’s so nice of you to let us know of your ebook and thanks for sharing your opinions.
I read “Brink” and sent it to everyone in our PR department. We’ve all found it extremely valuable. One of my colleagues said it was the best thing she’s ever read on social media. Thank you.
Wow, that’s nice to hear. Thank you!
That’s exactly what I needed. Help learning how to market on social networking sites. Thank you! If you don’t mind I would like to add it to my ebook directory.

Todd-
Great job on the e-book. It’s a great outline of what’s going on in social media and what works in social media.
I’ve already used this as a reference on a couple different occasions and will be recommending it to many of my co-workers.
Thanks,
Neal Stewart
I loved Brink! I am suggesting that my members of the Cal Poly PRSSA read it, espcially those who are interested in blogging. Thank you! I also wrote a short review about it on my blog for advice to PR sudents http://www.elizabethpoeschl.wordpress.com
Great book with actionable principles to apply. I look forward to continuing to follow your work.
Hi Todd
I graduated as a New Media Manager in Demnark back in 2001 and haven’t been focusing on social media as a marketingchannel other than from the distance. I’ve been sporadically blogging as an amateur since 2003, but have never digged deeply into the key substance of conversation marketing, but have spent more time on SEO and SEM. I have a LinkedIn profile, and a Facebook profile as well. Who hasn’t? Last week I finally took the step into the Twitter-world, even though I 5 months ago argued i public foras that this would only be a party for the geeks.
Since then my world has turned upside down, seriusly, not only because of all the white rabbits (as in: Follow the white rabbit – From alice in Wonderland) showing up here and there, but because the speed of trustworthy knowledge-sharing is in fact also growing so rapidly that it’s becoming more and more easy so select relevant and original stuff above the rest..
Someone passed a Twitter message about this E-book, and I’ve skimmed it, and oh yeah – I will read it tomorrow before 20 other E-books, and yes, you really get it when you say that we are poised on the “brink” of amazing change.
Social Media is, as we speak, changing the face of Marketing.
Thanks a lot for sharing. I will share it along as well and show it to people who are not even blogging;-)
@nickolass – Norway
this is one of the best, most comprehensive, and yet easy to read/follow ebooks i’ve seen on the subject. lots of golden nuggets. i will definitely recommend. thanks for sharing Todd!
(blushing)! Thanks!
If David Meerman Scott and Ann Handley gave you a thumbs up, that’s good enough for me. I’ll be happy to retweet!
This is one to save and re-read. It’s a mix of high-level thinking and tactical ideas.
As a long-time student of social media and manager of a social media strategy for my organization, I consider myself fairly knowledgeable.
Given my non-newbie status, I was surprised how much I learned from your book.
Thanks for writing!
Mary

Todd,
The initial e-book from SHIFT was my first connection between social media and public relations. It helped me “get it.” I am sure that I, and my students, will find this one even more useful! Thank you, as always, for your generosity.

Hey Todd… I read this on a long flight over the weekend and it was a great overview. One aspect that I’d be interested to hear more about is how/whether to introduce social media in an industry where the customers maybe aren’t ready for it yet. I work for a B2B company and many of our customers are small family businesses and barely able to handle e-mail, let alone social media tools. Should we drag them along kicking and screaming? Roll out tools and strategies that might not get adopted or utilized? What are your thoughts?
Hi amymengel…..
Well certainly you can make an initiative and start talking to your networks. Initially it might little difficult, but if you show them commuication benefits, then certainly they would be interested in it. I would like to add some thing to your question. B2B is a niche area. There is very little scope for social media. But if you go through a simple logic, somebody has to take an initiative to start building platforms and rooms for B2B. We never knew about social networking till Orkut and Facebook came up with. Similarly, if we intend to explore an area, we should rather look at initiating things. Hence we can start building networks and create rooms on social platforms for B2B professionals, and start creating buzz around it. Very soon this area will build its own network of people and we can further leverage these areas too for B2B communications.
I m a social Media consultant from India and i have suggested a similar kind of logic to one of my clients. You can even create dedicated networks as to begin with social media implementation in this vertical. Please look at this web 2.0 tool called – http://www.collectivex.com. I would recommend this as one of the best initiatives for B2B to begin with.
Let me know if u need any additional help for this vertical.
