A Good Problem to Have Is Still A Problem
As a business owner, one tends to swing between two axes: you’re either “not busy enough” or you are “too damn busy.”
Being “not busy enough,” that’s a bad problem to face. Demand is soft. The pipeline is weak. You may make short-sighted decisions to either boost your appeal or, to keep costs low so you can get through the lean times.
Being “too damned busy” is a classic example of a “good problem to have.” But it’s no less a problem.
In our own business, it’s a safe bet that we could have added a coupla extra “000,000′s” to SHIFT’s ledger this year if we’d been able to attract more quality employees, in a more timely way. We turned away quite a bit of business. For a growth-oriented company, that’s a problem we’d like to fix!
If you are reading this blog, it’s a safe bet that you respect me and/or the work you’ve seen or heard about at SHIFT. And if you are reading this blog, it’s a safe bet that you have discriminating taste! You’re insightful and savvy, but don’t take yourself too seriously. You like to kick ass on the work front then kick back with a beer. Mmm. Beer.
So why not apply for a gig at a place you’re likely to love working at, now that we are hiring at all levels? We need Senior VP types. We need Account Executives. We need Account Coordinators. We need Account Managers. Etc. Can’t hurt to have a little chat, right? No harm in that. Are we on the same page? Good: now go check out a full list of open positions!
And tell your friends.

Thanks for the heads up Todd. I have been a subscriber since your interview for Cision’s “Future of Media.” I really dig your view of the importance of earned media. I got my start in online marketing by tweeting out content and getting a good response, so I know how crucial it is. I appreciate getting the opportunity to work with you.
Being busy is better than doing nothing. If you are just sitting down the whole day this would be very frustrating. Time is gold so we must make use of our time wisely to grow and improve ourselves.

Todd, it makes me happy that Shift is doing so well, sir! Congratulations. I guess all that hard work stuff really does make you luckier.
Sadly, I am up here in Ottawa Canada wishing for my teleporter.
I will spread the good word.
Thanks, Kneale. But if you get that teleporter working, I suggest a trip to someplace more tropical.
Any plans to open a Detroit office?
As soon as you convince one of the Big 3 automakers to give us a nice fat contract, Nikki.
Alright, I’m on it!
I say go for the tech/energy markets in Michigan rather than the autos. Seems more in line with all the tech industry experience SHIFT has.
Still no SHIFT opps in Atlanta? I would LOVE to come back. I will work on convincing my husband to move to NYC, Boston or San Fran
We still can’t believe you’re married! You are welcome back anytime, Laura!
As a college student I find myself in the same predicament between not busy enough and too busy. I am a huge believer in a planner and time management. Being in public relations I feel like many of us have a lot on our plates and a lot going on so I don’t feel like my life is going to slow down any after really getting into this profession. Do you have any advice as to how to handle everything you have going on?
Here’s my advice: spent 4 waking hours each day NOT connected; NOT watching tv. I suggest reading, hanging with friends/family, and drinking on the razor’s edge of moderation.
And no, I am not kidding.
